PENQUIS - WomanCare, the local domestic abuse prevention program serving Piscataquis and southwestern Penobscot Counties, in collaboration with the Piscataquis Valley Adult Education Cooperative, will offer its spring 2009 advocate / helpline training beginning Tuesday, March 17. The training consists of 12 three hour sessions and will meet each Tuesday and Thursday from 5 p.m. – 8p.m. at the Piscataquis Community High School. Expected completion date is April 30th. Womancare needs volunteer advocates to assist in answering the help line from the office during regular business hours; to carry a pager and be willing to respond to calls, dispatched from Mayo Regional Hospital from their home phones after hours, weekends and holidays; to staff outreach offices in Dexter, Milo and Greenville once a week; to provide occasional child care; do court advocacy and to assist in facilitating support groups. Advocates provide a listening ear, emotional support, options and information to those struggling with issues of domestic abuse. There are other volunteer opportunities, as well, that do not include providing direct service to victims. If you would be willing to be included in our volunteer data base for occasional event planning, cooking, etc. please call the office to let us know of your interest. Time is a very valuable commodity, but you may have some to spare. Are you compassionate? Would you like to be involved with a group of people who are energetic, caring, supportive and passionate? Please call Womancare at 564-8165 for more information or to reserve a space in the training. |
