Chapman hit five free throws in the fourth quarter as the No. 2 Dexter girls basketball team earned its fifth straight Eastern Maine Class C
crown with a 45-38 win over No. 8 Calais Saturday night at the Bangor Auditorium.
Defending state champion Dexter (20-1) will square off against Western Maine champion Mount Abram of Strong in next Saturday night's Class C title game in Bangor. Ames scored seven points in the first quarter as the Tigers rolled out to a 13-2 lead in the first quarter, but the 15-7 Blue Devils forced 10 turnovers in the second and used an 8-0 run to tie the game at 21-21 going into the third quarter. Calais took its first lead of the game on a Jessica Brown offensive-rebound jumper 30 seconds into the third and later went up 27-24 when Kayla Beaton hit a baseline jump shot. But Dexter regained a 1-point lead by the end of the quarter. The Blue Devils tied it up again in the fourth but Chapman made two free throws with 3:51 left to put the Tigers ahead for good despite a 3-pointer by Kelli Cross of Calais with 1:15 remaining. Chapman, who comes off the bench, also grabbed a key rebound when she pulled down a missed Calais 3-pointer attempt with 9.4 seconds left in the game. Brown led Calais with 10 points. |
