By Diana Bowley, Of the NEWS Staff - Dexter — SAD 46 directors voted unanimously Monday night to hire Lester Butler of Norridgewock as the new superintendent of schools.

Butler, 47, is currently employed in SAD 34 in Belfast as the assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction.

Directors voted to award Butler a contract from July 12, 2001, to June 30, 2003. His starting salary was set at $72,500.

"I feel very honored to have been selected for superintendent of SAD 46 and I look forward to working with the board, staff, parents and community," Butler said Monday. He said he would work hard to promote the best possible education for district students.

The educator said he would work closely with the board to determine how to best address the district's declining enrollment.

Butler received his bachelor's degree in elementary education at the University of Maine at Farmington and received his master's degree at the University of Maine at Orono. His experience in education includes having served as K-5 principal in SAD 34, K-6 principal in SAD 40, K-4 principal in SAD 63 and a teacher in SAD 54.

Butler and his wife, Mary, a first-grade teacher in SAD 54 in Skowhegan, have two grown children.
