CHEt unveils Piscataquis County culture heritage map
Wednesday, March 27, 2002
PENQUIS VALLEY - If you live in Piscataquis County or if you are traveling there to visit Squaw Mountain, Moosehead, Sebec, or Schoodic Lake, stop by the Southern Piscataquis County Chamber of Commerce or the Moosehead Lake Region Chamber of Commerce and pick up your free map of the region entitled "Coming Home! Maine's Northwoods Villages". This map highlights some of the local outdoor recreation and heritage places as well as farms, food, and craft shops that people can visit.

"Coming Home! Maine's Northwoods Villages" map was created by CHEt, the Cultural Heritage and Eco tourism Committee of the Piscataquis County Economic Development Council (working with Eastern Maine Development Corporation). "You would be surprised at the amount of people who don't know where the historical society museums, recreation areas, and local landmarks are located, or where local farm and craft products are made and sold in Piscataquis County. Hopefully this map will help!" says Tracy Michaud Stutzman, CHEt's Cultural-Heritage Development Director. This map is only one project in a series of projects CHEt has completed that highlights the vast array of cultural resources available in this region of Maine.

CHEt is composed of local citizens from throughout Piscataquis County and Dexter who are dedicated to promoting their rich culture and heritage for economic development. Recent CHEt projects include the production of the Piscataquis Cultural Heritage Directory and website (accessible from www.pcedc.org), the "Blessed in Bounty, Piscataquis County" video, "Developing a Sense of Place through the Arts" middle level educational curriculum – which received a SEED Developer award by the Center for Educational Services, the "Acoustic Tour of Piscataquis County" developed with Sidney Stutzman and the Doughty Hill Band, and the annual Columbus Day weekend "Traditional Skills Demonstration Day" (renamed this year to the "Piscataquis Heritage Festival").

These projects have been completed with funding from U.S. Housing and Urban Development, Maine Arts Commission, Maine Community Foundation, and the Quebec Labrador foundation. For more information regarding the map or any of the above CHEt programs please call Tracy Michaud Stutzman at 207-564-7058 or email.
