DEXTER - SAD 46 directors recently hired one administrator and accepted the resignation of another.
Directors voted to hire Stephen Bell, 38, as Dexter Regional High School principal. Bell, who has served as assistant principal and athletic director in the district for seven years, was given a two-year contract and a $66,000 salary. He will begin his new duties in July. Before his Dexter association, Bell was a history and overnment teacher at Piscataquis Community High School for seven years.
In April, Bell accepted the position of principal at Skowhegan Regional High School, but he since has told officials at that school he will not be taking the job.
"I was flattered to be offered a Class A principalship," Bell said Monday of the Skowhegan position. He acknowledged that it was a difficult decision to choose between the two positions. "Obviously, I love the school, staff and kids here at Dexter," Bell said. Also playing a role in his decision was the chance to be closer to his family at the end of the school day, he said.
School officials have begun a search for a new principal at Dexter Middle School upon the resignation last week of Alan Smith, 54, of Newport.
Smith, who has served as principal in Dexter for four years, has accepted a position as superintendent of Union 90 (Alton, Bradley, Greenbush and Milford). His resignation is effective June 30.
"I just have had a good four years here," Smith said Monday.
He said he would miss the district school's staff and students, especially the daily contact he had with students, but added he also was looking forward to the new position.
"I feel that's a place where I can do the most for the community and the students," he said.
