19 Dexter area residents traveling to New Orleans to help victims of Hurricane Katrina
Wednesday, May 21, 2008
DEXTER - Fund-raising efforts are under way to send a team from the First Free Baptist Church of Dexter to help Katrina hurricane victims. The week of July 5-12, nineteen adults and youths will be traveling to New Orleans to provide physical and spiritual help to families still displaced from the effects of the hurricane.

The team needs to raise nearly $17,000 just for their expenses. However, they have set their fund-raising goal higher to allow a purchase of a desperately needed gift (appliance or bathroom fixtures) for each of the two families they will be helping. The trip is being planned and managed by Delta Ministries International of Oregon. Delta Ministries have sent more than 70 teams and 700 volunteers since August of 2005. These teams and volunteers from all over the United States have traveled to the hurricane hit areas to provide continuing help. Yet, the ongoing plea of the residents continues to be, “Don't forget us.”

When the Dexter team arrives they will be paired with two families who will work side by side in rebuilding their homes and lives. In the evening, the Christian band, Fishers of Men, who are part of the Dexter team, will put on several concerts for individuals who are still in temporary housing or homeless, living in shelters.

The team members are responsible for their air transportation, lodging, food, ground transportation, gas, and other expenses for the trip. They have many fund-raising projects scheduled for the next several weeks. The projects are: Saturday, May 24th 9–1 a car wash with a “sweet twist”; a free whoopie pie with a $5 donation, Saturday, May 31st 8 –2 yard sale, and Sunday, June 8th a spaghetti dinner noon – 2pm with Fishers of Men concert immediately following. All events will be held at the FFBC, 130 Main Street, Dexter.

If anyone would like to make personal donations, all check should be made out to FFBC with memo marked “Missions Trip” and mailed to FFBC, Attn.: Lillian, P O Box 111, Dexter, Maine. For more information about the trip or any of the fund-raising events, call Lillian at 924-7139.

The team is looking forward to seeing how God will use them to rebuild lives and homes in New Orleans.
