DEXTER - On Thursday, May 22 the Dexter Key Club was invited as a special guest of Womancare at their annual meeting at Hutchins Hall in Dover-Foxcroft. Three members from the club attended with advisor Rick Whitney. Megan Crane, President, Jake Sherburne, Director, and Rebecca Fick, a senior and out-going Public Relations Chair accepted one of four Community Service Awards from Womancare for our support of their program this year. The Key Club sponsored Womancare in our "Welcome to My Home" fundraiser last October, when the club raised $1,014.00 for Womancare. The Dexter Sunrise Kiwanis opened their new Kiwanis Family Thrift Shop on Grove Street in the former ambulance garage on Friday, May 23. The building will be used as a community thrift shop operated by the Kiwanis Club. On Saturday, Jake Sherburne assisted at the shop for two hours. The Shop is open Monday through Saturday, 10:00-3:00. Key Club members will be helping from time to time. The Key Club Garden is ready for planting at Brewster Inn, and plans are to plant flowers on Wednesday, May 28 after school. This is the second year of the Key Club Garden and the club is grateful to Brewster Inn for allowing us to promote Key Club through the garden. On Friday, May 30, the Key Club is sponsoring a dress-up day at Dexter High School to benefit Cystic Fibrosis. This is the third year that the Key Club has sponsored the event and the club hopes to raise $150 for Cystic Fibrosis. On Saturday, May 31, the Key Club will be cleaning the Grist Mill Museum in Dexter for their summer opening on June 16. The Key Club historically readies the museum each year for the summer opening. On Monday, June 2 the Dexter Community K-Kids will have their last meeting in Dexter with the students "jumping For the Heart" to benefit the American Heart Association. Garland K-Kids recently raised $102.00 doing the same program. The K-Kids have been very active this year and the Key Club helps to run their meetings. Other up-coming events include; Spring Carnival at Garland school June 5, Special Olympics in Orono on Saturday, June 7 and the Key Club will be helping at the Soap Box Derby in Brewer also on Saturday, June 7, and the Key Club will provide ushers at graduation on June 8. The Kiwanis club is sponsoring a Pancake Breakfast with the Knights of Columbus at the K of C Hall on Saturday, June 14, and a number of Key Club members will also be going to the Seeds of Peace camp in Otisfield to help clean and ready the camp for opening. The Key Club will then go to Camp Sunshine in Casco for an open house. Finally, the Key Club will be holding a car wash on June 21 as a fundraiser for International Convention (ICON) in Denver in July.
