DRHS graduate receives Gates Millennium Scholarship

DEXTER - Jamie Vivas, a senior who attended Dexter Regional High School, recently received the Gates Millennium Scholarship. The Gates Millennium Scholars, (GMS), funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, was established to provide outstanding African American, American Indian/Alaska Natives, Asian Pacific Islander Americans, and Hispanic American students with an opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education, in all discipline areas and a graduate education for those students pursuing studies in mathematics, science, engineering, education, or library science.

The goal of GMS is to promote excellence and to provide an opportunity for thousands of outstanding students with significant financial need to reach their fullest potential.

Jamie, daughter of Roberta Vivas and granddaughter of Althea Minton and the late Robert Minton, was a participant in many school activities including the Library Club and Math Team, will be attending Boston University in the fall to study medicine, with a full scholarship.
