"Since the inception of the Maine Property Tax and Rent Refund Program, thousands of Maine residents have qualified for a refund from the state," stated Senator Davis. "This is a great program, and I strongly encourage anyone who thinks they may be eligible to apply."

Important changes have been made to the income limits that should allow more Mainers to qualify for a refund this year. The income limit for the non-elderly refund is now $43,600 if you have a spouse or dependents, and $28,100 for singles without dependents.

Homeowners or renters may qualify for the program if they were Maine residents for the entire calendar year 2000, owned or rented a home in Maine for the entire calendar year 2000, and had a 2000 property tax bill that was more than 4% of total household income or paid rent in 2000 that was more than 22% of total household income. Some elderly residents do not need to meet this financial requirement if their income is below $13,900 when living with a spouse or dependent or $11,200 for those living alone.

The maximum refund amount is $1000. The filing deadline is December 31, 2001.
