Saturday, September 20, 2008
DEXTER - Eight staff members from the Tiger Wellness Team participated in the conference, which was held at Sugarloaf Mountain Ski Resort in Rangeley, Maine, from June 25-28, 2007

The conference included team planning activities, personal wellness tips, round table discussions, health screenings, and exhibits. As a result of these activities, the team was able to learn about topical health issues (such as the importance of Vitamin D supplements), ideas for nontoxic living, and the latest research on Eating Disorders.

Some of the team took part in the health screenings including vision, hearing ,and osteoporosis evaluations; others took time out for their individual wellness activities, such as Latin Dancing , a walk to the waterfall, line dancing, yoga and Nordic Walking. In addition, the team heard inspiring speakers ranging from Dr. John Bagnulo's assent to Mount Everest, to Hilarity Therapy by John Irvin, to Jana Stanfield's performance of Heavy Mental music.

All of these ideas gave the team new insights into planning and implementing a Wellness Action plan for staff and students within the SAD # 46 community and reinforced the habits needed for establishing a journey to better health. It was also a chance for the team to better learn how to take care of themselves and fit exercise into their day.

One team member mentioned being inspired by hearing someone speak about ascending Mount Everest and discussing the challenges and rewards of the trip well as hearing about an Olympic Snow boarder's trek to the the Olympics and his struggle to make snowboarding a recognized sporting event.

The trip to the conference was made possible by a grant from the Piscataquis Public Health Council (PPHC).
