DEXTER – The Dexter High School Key Club will again co-sponsor the “Welcome to My Home” fundraiser for the homeless on Saturday, Oct. 16 at Wayside Park in Dexter. The Dexter High School Student Council, Seeds of Peace and the Dexter High School Football Team are co-sponsors again this year. This is the fourth year of the event which is designed to raise awareness of homelessness and to raise funds for homeless agencies. This year the groups are raising money for Shaw House in Bangor, Womancare of Dover-Foxcroft, Journey House of Dexter and Friend a Gorilla – a new Key Club charity to save the habitat and mountain gorillas of Uganda. Participants will begin with a walk at the high school to Wayside Park at about 5:30 p.m. and those taking part will sleep out in the park on Saturday evening beginning at 6 p.m. until 7 a.m. Sunday morning. Those taking part may bring a cardboard box to sleep in and/or a blanket or sleeping bag. Electronic devices are banned and the students will only have barrel fires and a can of soup at midnight for warmth. Participants will be collecting pledges for the event and this year a goal of $4,000 has been set. The event also collects new blankets, toiletry items (soaps, shampoos, paper products, etc.) and non-perishable food items. The public is invited to visit at the park during the evening and donations can be dropped off at the site. The event has raised nearly $12,000 the last three years. |
