DOVER-FOXCROFT - Although delivery of influenza vaccine was delayed by manufacturers this year, supplies of the vaccine are now on hand. Flu shots are available through physician practices in the Penquis region who are affiliated with Mayo Regional Hospital.
Doctors' offices in Dexter, Dover-Foxcroft, Guilford and Milo are prioritizing vaccinations early in the flu season and giving shots first to people at highest risk of complications from the flu. People in the high-risk group are 65 and older, and those under 65 with chronic illness, including heart and lung diseases, and diabetes.
People not in the high-risk group may receive their shots any time through the month of December. Peak activity for the flu season typically comes between January and March, so vaccinations given in December will be effective.
Physician practices in the Penquis region are providing flu shots through the following schedule:
• Dexter Family Practice, 924-7349, flu shots by appointment only Wednesday, Nov. 21, 1:30-3:30 p.m.; Tuesday, Nov. 27, 9:30-11:30 a.m.; Wednesday, Nov. 28, 1:30-3:30 p.m.; Tuesday, Dec. 4, 1:30-3:30 p.m.; Thursday, Dec. 6, 9:30-11:30 a.m. and 1:30-3:30 p.m.; Tuesday, Dec. 11, 9:30-11:30 a.m. and 1:30-3:30 p.m.; and Wednesday, Dec. 12, 1:30-3:30 p.m. Call ahead to reserve appointment time.Getting an annual flu shot is an inexpensive, preventive action for almost everyone, and the flu shot in many cases will cost nothing. Physicians participating in Medicare Part B will charge the federal government, not the Medicare patient, for the shot.
