Dexter's Wayside receives two grants
Saturday, December 20, 2008
DEXTER - The Wayside Theater in North Dexter received two grants last month. A grant in the amount of $3,000 from The Maine Community Foundation was received at the end of November, 2008, and an additional grant was received from The William and Joan Alfond Foundation in the amount of $6,000. The grant funds were for the materials to complete the construction of the extension to the original theatre building, which was once the North Dexter Grange Hall.

The Charleston Correctional Facility provided free labor for the project, and the newly received funds from MCF and The Alfond Foundation provided the means for completing the interior work such as electrical work, plumbing for a bathroom backstage on the second floor of the addition.

Grant funds also will provide the materials for completing the interior work on the first floor, which is to be used as a meeting room for Wayside Grange and for other group events.

Some of the grant funds will go for the purchase of curtains, paint for the walls, floor covering and lighting, and a ceiling. Combined with the free labor from Charleston Correctional Facility, these two generous grants for the additional space have made it possible for Wayside Theatre to expand its special programs, provide for secondary rehearsal space for the Youth Theatre, and create easy access to the Wayside dining room and the theatre auditorium.

Without funding from these institutions, none of this would have been possible. Theater organizers expressed deep appreciation for having been awarded the two grants.
